In his book, The Necessity of Prayer, E.M. Bounds wrote, “Faith-filled prayer is to be a definite, specific, asking for and expecting the things for which we ask.” I read that last night and spent time dwelling on it. However, when I was reciting Colossians today, the truth came alive:
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God. May you be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy…. Colossians 1:9-11
Paul was specific in his prayers for the church of Colossae! He wanted them to know exactly what he was asking from God! He wanted to see tangible ways how God answered! This was a revelation from the Lord: I will not see God specifically working and answering prayer unless I am specific in my requests! Of course, God knows our hearts, thoughts, and needs, BUT from a faith-building perspective, I WANT TO SEE HIM DIRECTLY ANSWER PRAYER spoken from my lips! I want to see His power and might! I want to see Him be so real and alive that my heart almost bursts! And I believe He showed me that I need to be specific in my asking!
Bounds wrote further, “The lack of faith lies at the root of all poor praying, feeble praying, little praying, and unanswered praying.” Wow. Do we believe God is willing and able? Our beliefs ALWAYS dictate our actions…Paul believed God.
Give me faith, Lord! Help my unbelief!
